the obama campaign is making an effort to portray romney as having been dishonest in that debate? can that argument be effective when you're trying to reach some of these undecided voters who at this late hour are still in fact undecided. >> i think it's a mistake for the president. it sounds like sour grapes that he wasn't able to stand up to romney who was lying. that's a kind negativity. the president needs to tell what's he wants to do. one of the things was his own agenda was so thin, that he wasn't able to convey to the public that he had an offensive, a effective second term agenda. i think the second thing he has to do is he really has to bear down and answer some more detailed questions about his own agenda, about his own debt reduction plan, which as andrea mitchell pointed out that evening, really has a lot of holes in it. so i think he would be best to not complain about, not lambaste his opponent, but really kind of hit the books, get down to work, portray a more positive agenda the next time around. and for goodness sakes, look at the camera, don't look down. >> you

the first debate between barack obama and mitt romney is tomorrow night. and the campaigns are doing whatever they can to get ready. actually i heard that the obama campaign is a little worried because during his flight to nevada on sunday the president apparently watched four hours of football instead of studying. although it did mark the first time all year obama's seen something get passed. very interesting. >> tonight jimmy welcomes funny man martin short, actor logan and a musical guest. that's at 12:35, 11:35 central time on your local nbc station. >>> tmz is reporting a trouble on the set of "american idol." we knew this was coming, right? >> is it set up, though? is it real. >> we shall see. new judge nikcki minaj threatend to knock out mariah carey over a disagreement on a contestant. she said she's not going to put up with her highness. we cleaned that up for tv. >>> the sing he's of the best-selling duet in pop music history, "you're the one that i want" will be reuniting. they have a holiday album coming out. proceeds go to charity. >>> liam ne

president obama hitting the campaign trail today after his dismal debate performance. joining is now, let's get right to it. what is he going to do now? >> i think this is an interesting question. at the top of your show you talked about how the liberals are so upset with president obama, and i think that was actually a turning point in creating a consensus in america that romney somehow brought to the obama. it was not so much conservatives , and that the conservatives to think romney won, but it was liberals. everybody from michael more to build more up in arms with president obama, so they want him to go at pain before he's seventh person at the offshore accounts. lou: but you don't think that obama got his tail kicked? >> i think the debate was a draw or something like that. lou: that draw? i think clearly president obama missed the opportunity to do that during the debate. he kind of let mr. romney climb out of that kind of space that they had put him in, but there will be many other opportunities as we see the president's back strong on the stump hammering romney. there will be another debate. we forget it's a long time ago, mondale wins the first debate against reagan, reagan comes back and cleans his clock in the second one. john kerry in 2004, you remember, won the first debate, against george bush. george bush similarly seemed very unhappy to be there as the president. bush comes back in the second one and wins, goes on to win. so lots of opportunity for the president to come back. but clearly let romney back into this. >> i guess, sam, how far is mitt going to go towards the middle? i mean, bill brings up the question of reproductive rights, the obama care question is certainly still, you know, how much is mitt romney going to embrace massachusetts, his legacy there, in the coming weeks? it's a sharp pivot. >> wasn't just during the debate. he was
